What are DVLA number plates?

DVLA number plates are personalised registrations issued and managed by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Every private plate in the UK originates from the DVLA, whether bought directly, at auction, or through a recognised reseller like RegHunters.

Buying through a specialist gives you access to a far wider range than DVLA stock alone, including cherished and dateless registrations held by private sellers, all in one place.

A personalised registration lets you put a name, word, initials or memorable combination on your vehicle, and can also hide its age. Many buyers see a private plate as a long-term investment, since sought-after registrations tend to hold or grow their value over time.

Once you have found your plate, we handle the entire DVLA transfer and paperwork for you.

Types of DVLA number plates

Quick answer: UK registrations fall into six groups. Current style runs from 2001 onward, prefix from 1983 to 2001, suffix from 1963 to 1983, and dateless covers anything before 1963. Northern Irish marks are identified by an I or Z, while Q plates are reserved for vehicles whose age cannot be confirmed. Any of these can be held as a personalised plate, and because dateless and Northern Irish marks show no year, they suit a vehicle of any age.
Type Years issued Example Key feature
Current style 2001 to present AB26 XYZ The widest choice and the cheapest entry point
Prefix 1983 to 2001 P123 ABC Lends itself well to names and initials
Suffix 1963 to 1983 ABC 123A Leading letters tend to lift desirability
Dateless Pre-1963 JON 1 Carries no age, so it goes on any car
Northern Irish Any age JAZ 1234 A budget-friendly way to disguise a car's age
Q plate Varies Q123 ABC Used where a vehicle's age cannot be established

DVLA number plates: common questions

What is a DVLA number plate?

A DVLA number plate is a personalised vehicle registration issued and managed by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. All UK private plates originate from the DVLA, and can be bought directly, at DVLA auction, or through a recognised reseller like RegHunters.

How much do DVLA number plates cost?

Prices start from around £25 plus VAT for entry-level registrations and rise into the thousands or more for rare, short or sought-after plates. The price depends on the format, length and what the plate spells.

Is RegHunters affiliated with the DVLA?

RegHunters is a recognised reseller of DVLA registrations but is not part of, or directly affiliated with, the DVLA or DVLA Personalised Registrations. We help you find and buy plates and handle the official transfer process on your behalf.

How do I put a DVLA plate on my car?

Once you have bought your plate, we handle the DVLA transfer for you. You will either receive a certificate of entitlement (V750) to assign when ready, or we assign the registration directly to your vehicle as part of the process.

Can a DVLA plate hide the age of my car?

A dateless or Northern Irish registration carries no age identifier, so it can be displayed on a vehicle of any age. You cannot, however, make a vehicle appear newer than it is using an age-related plate.

Do you handle all the paperwork?

Yes. We manage the full DVLA transfer and administration on your behalf, so buying your plate is straightforward and hassle free from start to finish.
